How can I get my Emergency Medical Technician Certification (EMT)?
There are a few ways to obtain your EMT certification. First, you can take a semester class at a community college. You can also take an EMT class at a trade school. There are many trade schools in the Phoenix metro area that offer EMT certification. The best way to find them is to search EMT certification programs on the internet. Some of the trade schools offer accelerated programs which allow you to obtain your EMT in as little as 14 days.
Do you get paid to attend the fire academy as a firefighter recruit?
Yes, you are paid to attend the fire academy. Currently, firefighter recruit pay is $50,725.26 yearly.
How often do firefighters work?
Firefighters work a 48-hour schedule spilt between 3 shifts (A-B-C shift). Following a shift, crews have four days off. On average firefighters work 10 days a month.
Is there an age restriction to becoming a firefighter?
There is no maximum age. The only age restriction is being 18yrs old at the time of application.
Where do I obtain a CPAT?
The CPAT can be obtained from any CPAT licensee. Make sure the organization you take the CPAT through will release the results to Mesa Fire and Medical as well as other Arizona Fire Departments. You can get a CPAT in Arizona at certain Community Colleges. Please see the Maricopa Community College or Central Arizona College website for additional information. Do I have to take a CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) to get hired?
Yes. Successful completion of the CPAT with a licensed CPAT agency current within one year of the beginning of the selection process is required. For a list of CPAT licensees by state, go to https://www.iaff.org/cpat-licensing/#licensees .
Can I test if I do not have an Arizona driver's license?
Yes, however, if selected you must possess a valid Arizona driver's license by the hire date. Visit the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division website at http://www.azdot.gov/mvd/ to learn about how to secure an Arizona driver's license.
Do you accept applications from out-of-state applicants?
Yes, you are not required to live in the state to apply, test, or work as a firefighter. All travel expenses will be the candidate's responsibility.
How do I transfer my EMT from another state?
