What is CompStat?

Compstat stands for 'Computer Statistics' dealing specifically with crime. It was developed in the 1990s at the New York Police Department to help reduce crime. It was found to be an effective way to accurately track crime and use the information to deploy officers to address it in timely manner.

Compstat is a performance management system that is used to reduce crime and achieve other police department goals. It emphasizes information-sharing, responsibility and accountability, and improving effectiveness. 

What is the benefit to the Community?

CompStat allows us to track crime problems and allocate resources to the areas that are being affected. By being able to focus our efforts on areas being impacted, we are able to make apprehensions and drive down crime in Maricopa.

CompStat also provides us with monthly reports that we share with the community so that you can see what we are doing, and how crime is impacting our neighborhoods.  These reports are broken down into Part 1 and Part 2 crimes. The FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program divides offenses into two groups, Part I and Part II crimes.  Each month, participating law enforcement agencies submit information on the number of Part I offenses that become known to them; those offenses cleared by arrest or exceptional means; and the age, sex, and race of persons arrested for each of the offenses.  Contributors provide only arrest data for Part II offenses.

So, what is a Part I Crime?

The FBI defines eight crimes as Part I offenses: murder and non-negligent homicide, rape (legacy & revised), robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny-theft, and arson. These offenses were chosen because they are serious crimes, they occur with regularity in all areas of the country, and they are likely to be reported to police.
